Don’t miss this unique chance to tour one of the region’s finest private gardens with this fundraiser for the Port Washington Historical Society!

AFTERGLOW FARM
In mid-June the gardens of Afterglow Farm, vibrant islands of perennials and flowering shrubs in a verdant landscape sprawling along the Lake Michigan shore, will be lush with color. That will be the scene on Sunday, June 16, when the gardens and the grounds of the 120-acre property north of Port Washington will be opened to the public for the Spring in Bloom Garden Tour. “Spring in Bloom will be a rare opportunity for people to see one of the region’s most remarkable examples of country gardening in an environment that is amazingly rich in natural character,” said Jean Schanen, co-chair of the event, which is being organized by the Port Washington Historical Society as a fundraiser. “The garden tour is really an invitation to visit a private preserve of botanical beauty.”

Established in 1929 as a summer residence by Joseph an IIma Uihlein, Afterglow Farm has a Germanic-style timber and fieldstone cottage and outbuildings set amid large informal gardens. Afterglow’s Circle Garden, designed as a cottage garden, features plantings around a fountain and fish pool, surrounded by a vine-covered fence with a decorative iron gate. The terraced Elsie’s Garden includes a stonework floor inspired by the Thyme Walk at Highgrove Estate in England. The gardens are set in a landscape in which maple, beech and ash woodland surround ephemeral ponds, small orchards, a cedar plantation, prairie plantings and ravines. Secluded paths, including one leading to the Lake Michigan beach, wind through the property. Spring in Bloom is a self-guided walking tour and will be held rain or shine. Wheelchair and stroller accessibility is limited due to the terrain. Abundant free parking.

By Tricia DuSaint

Late spring is a perfect time to add more locally grown raw, leafy greens to our menus. Not only do we support our local economy when buying from area growers, we enjoy much greater flavor and nutritional value from foods that have not been transported long distances (and save fossil fuels, too!).

Green, leafy vegetables contain large amounts of chlorophyll which detoxify and oxygenate the bloodstream which then carries oxygen throughout the body. Dark leafy greens also provide many vitamins (e.g. A, B1, B2, Niacin, C, E, Folic Acid), minerals (e.g. calcium, iron, manganese) and essential amino acids (important in protein formation).

So get out the salad bowl and enjoy nature’s spring bounty with these delicious recipes!

Quick Garden Salad

8 cups organic mixed greens, your choice

1 avocado, cubed

1 c. sprouts

1 cucumber or 1 zucchini, cubed or thinly sliced

2 – 3 scallions, chopped

1 lg. tomato, cubed, or 8 cherry tomatoes, halved

Optional: raw sunflower or pumpkin seeds

Combine all ingredients, stir in salad dressing of choice and top with sunflower or pumpkin seeds or ―yummy pate (see below).

Spinach Salad

1 bunch organic spinach, shredded

3 – 4 radishes, sliced

1 onion, diced

1 c. white mushrooms, sliced

½ c. fresh basil

1 clove garlic, minced

¼ c. raw sunflower seeds

Toss all ingredients together and mix in salad dressing of choice.

This is the third year the Port Washington Winter-Spring Farmers’ Market was held and it seems to have really caught on! We had many loyal customers as well as new people finding us at every market. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and the market is becoming the lively community event we envisioned from the beginning.

Over the course of the winter-spring seasons, our vendors were able to extend the growing season and offer a variety of fresh fruits and plenty of veggies like kale, salad greens, peppers, potatoes, onions, beets and carrots. Fresh herbs were also a feature.

Some of the specialty foods that were found at the market were cheeses, eggs, herbal teas, baked goods, sorghum products, jams, jellies, syrups and honey and yummy kettle-corn.

And…let’s not forget our artisan vendors who brought soy candles, bath and body products, children’s books, hand-made wooden toys and cutting boards. There was so much to see and choose from!

Integrating local musicians added a special flare. We were pleased to highlight several talented musicians over the course of the season; there was a lot of tapping and clapping going on.

I am very pleased with the success of our third year. Our foundations have been set, our plans are being met and the focus of recruiting and broadening our farmer base has been thus far successful.

We extend a sincere thank you to PortFish, LLC, First Congregational Church and of course our vendors for their support and help in making this event possible. It is with immense pride that we have all been able to bring this type of opportunity to our great community.

And to our customers, your support keeps our local growers and artisans going strong. Thank you! And don’t forget that buying local also offers the healthiest, tastiest, freshest products.

See you in November!
